When we began our ambitious reforestation program back in 2014, we planted a promise for the future. Over 40,000 indigenous trees were lovingly placed into the earth, with the hope of restoring the natural balance of this beautiful landscape. Today, we are deeply moved to see that promise being rewarded in ways we could have only dreamed of.
What started as an environmental initiative has blossomed into a thriving, self-sustaining ecosystem. The roots of these native trees have firmly anchored our soil, completely eliminating erosion and creating a lush, resilient haven for a vast array of plant and animal species.
Every single day at The Retreat now brings a new, pleasant surprise.
If you look up into the fresh foliage, you will see a spectacular resurgence of vibrant birdlife. Nests are tucked safely into the branches, filling the air with morning choruses that serve as nature’s own wake-up call.
Down on the ground, the earth is giving back to us in the sweetest ways possible. Recently, we came across wild figs growing naturally in our sanctuary. Completely free from artificial fertilizers, their deep color and pure, untamed flavor are truly special. To add to this natural bounty, we are absolutely thrilled to share that the green apple trees we planted have officially borne their very first fruits!
Watching this ecosystem evolve has completely rewritten the guest experience on our property.
As our gardens have come alive, we are increasingly convinced of a wonderful truth: The Retreat at Ngorongoro is far more than a place to rest between safaris. It has transformed into a vibrant destination all on its own.
From discovering rare bird nests to tasting fresh fruit straight from the branch, there is an entire world to experience right outside your cottage door. We invite you to slow down and truly immerse yourself in this sanctuary. When planning your Tanzanian adventure, we highly encourage you to ask your travel designer to ensure that sufficient time is explicitly built into your itinerary for The Retreat at Ngorongoro. Give yourself the gift of an extended stay, and dedicate at least one full day just to losing yourself in the magic of our living gardens.
Nature is putting on a spectacular show here, and we cannot wait to share it with you.
